It's an essay for the Business Communication course on BBS, the call for it was: to visit ARC exhibition and write a small review about 2-3 billboards, and write the own ideas about ReStart or RestArt :)
Review about my favourite posters on ARC exhibition
To decide from the first sight was not easy, because all the exhibited posters made by creative persons, who knows how to catch your eye to reveal the message.
One of my favourite is the Born of Bélus. I just stucked in front of it and try to decide whatever it was good or not. I liked it, because it was like a rarely painted picture, not just edited by computers. Changing Venus, the symbol of beauty, to a man who is not an ideal renessaince man: for me these were the impacts. To realize it’s time to think over the average ideals. Is it happened to us, that besides the fashion world’s unlivablely slim models, borned a new fetish beauty or is it the real, everydays-life-beauty, who will define our future estetics’ meanings? Is it an answer to this photoshopped world, or just a react for the fetishists?
My second chosen is called “ReTusa”. I think it’s a fine work, can make me easily think about these topics. About how easy to change the real things to another, and then finally it means what we wanted so. But, in this case, the relation is about cutting and editing a bad experience to a funny and naive situation. The active fighting body caught my eye, made me remember the fights in Budapest, which I have only seen on TV (same perception). This photo shooted in another country, but can easily find out the similarities related to the Hungarian attacks on the streets. Could this restart happen without any revolutionary moment? Could a simple “user” just change the items in our hands or in our minds? I mean will those people recognize the pointless aggressivity in their actions?
The next picture is not as detailed as the last two: called the “Critical Bus”. After the high popularity of Critical Mass, a big event for bicyclist to show and present their ideas about personal transportation, the “Critical Bus” activity may become real in the previous future. I can’t drive, but when I moved to Budapest I realized I wouldn’t try to get my driving license here. The cause of it is that here the public transportation is faster and not so stressful as the driving. Both signs created with the simpliest figures to became a suitable form to stuck or spread out everywhere in the city. There’s no need to explain the situation when a new activity use a known underground symbol or similar style to get the associations of the original symbol: in this case you win those people who has the Critical Mass as their Lovemark. It’s a strong relation, and everyone’s touched by this problem: by the way, it’s on the streets!
My restart idea
The restart, what I have chosen to present is more likely to global, but also is a part of my life. Otherwise, it is not a plan to do, but a consequence from the last twenty years.
There are three elements of the “back to the roots restart”. It was simple to recognize a trend in our community: after was being flood by the “West means freedom” fenomenon, people seems to be bored by these mass-poducts and mass-culture in some ways. In the 1990’s, these products and methods (from the western countries, mainly from USA) were warmly welcomed, nobody would avoided them. Second, that throught these opened gates, the global crisis was unavoidable for Europe and also for us. It’s known, that in hard-days-period people try to find a trusty icon to believe in. Also, the crisis was that inductor which made this happen faster and more remarkable. And the last element is probably our particular political behavior.
For these elements the answer seems to be the restart in our cultural things, national food, products, and to realize and to make a difference between: “us” and “them”. In the last five years shown up new media channels to serve this need, new network for home-made and national food, and new civil groups who identify themselves as proud protectors of the nation. More and more people following the bio-fashion (no matter if its not the making method, just a simple markname/brandname), the Hungarian cultural and decorating signs are reconquer the youngsters, it can be seen on the national TV-channel’s spots, also. Nowadays you can be questioned in your origin if you are not wearing the clothes and jewels from the era of Conquest of Hungary, or if you want to try yourself in abroad. The old Hungarian songs and instruments are also shown up in modern types of music, mixed with rock or electric ways. All these trends are also driven by the politics, it can make every simple case to a big “Are you real Hungarian by the way?!” question. Of course, it is an expected reaction: to return our history and roots, we can see many many old type of flags and maps about the “Big Hungary” on the streets, on people’s shirts or in our homes (TV). Besides these national sings, historical names and symbols are recycled by groups, it can be seen that their meanings has changed, the most of these fanatics just follow their first man without thinking. But I can’t see, what is the main point, why they want me to change my clothes, my ideas, my mind to be “more Hungarian”? Anyway, if they or anybody know what is it personally. Or if they even think that it can be defined by few shirts or customer behaviour.
I think this return or restart will calm down with time, if the crisis and the questions in our minds about Trianon or System changing in 1989, will be answered.
